The Circuit
The Autodromo do Algarve is situated in Portimao on Portugal’s southern coast. It’s become a favourite testing venue for F1 teams during the foggy, damp winter months where the local hotels and beach bars are barren. In September, however, warm weather is promised and you’ll likely find some well-refreshed British or German holiday-makers who have overstayed their welcome. The circuit, which is less than a year old, is typical by modern standards – first class safety, good facilities, and a wide track which is conducive to overtaking. Also, like Spa, it is a very undulating circuit and that’s always great fun for both drivers and spectators.
There’s a big drop down to the first turn, a right hander, which is a challenge under braking.
This modern track has more personality than many and is a roller-coaster ride for the drivers. Best of all, there should be plenty of overtaking.
